“Can you lift up your voice to the clouds,
That an abundance of water may cover you?
35 Can you send out lightnings, that they may go,
And say to you, ‘Here we are!’?
36 yWho has put wisdom in 1the mind?
Or who has given understanding to the heart?
37 Who can number the clouds by wisdom?
Or who can pour out the bottles of heaven,
38 When the dust hardens in clumps,
And the clods cling together?
For zit was of the Lord 8to harden their hearts, that they should come against Israel in battle, that He might utterly destroy them, and that they might receive no mercy, but that He might destroy them, aas the Lord had commanded Moses.
“Now therefore,” he said, q“put away the foreign gods which are among you, and rincline your heart to the Lord God of Israel.”
24 And the people ssaid to Joshua, “The Lord our God we will serve, and His voice we will obey!”
“Make kthe heart of this people dull,
And their ears heavy,
And shut their eyes;
lLest they see with their eyes,
And hear with their ears,
And understand with their heart,
And return and be healed.”
“How lyou are fallen from heaven,
O 4Lucifer, son of the morning!
How you are cut down to the ground,
You who weakened the nations!
13 For you have said in your heart:
m‘I will ascend into heaven,
nI will exalt my throne above the stars of God;
I will also sit on the omount of the congregation
pOn the farthest sides of the north;
14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds,
qI will be like the Most High.’
15 Yet you rshall be brought down to Sheol,
To the 5lowest depths of the Pit.
s“Inasmuch as these people draw near with their mouths
And honor Me twith their lips,
But have removed their hearts far from Me,
And their fear toward Me is taught by the commandment of men,
14 uTherefore, behold, I will again do a marvelous work
Among this people,
A marvelous work and a wonder;
vFor the wisdom of their wise men shall perish,
And the understanding of their prudent men shall be hidden.”
15 wWoe to those who seek deep to hide their counsel far from the Lord,
And their works are in the dark;
xThey say, “Who sees us?” and, “Who knows us?”
16 Surely you have things turned around!
Shall the potter be esteemed as the clay;
For shall the ything made say of him who made it,
“He did not make me”?
Or shall the thing formed say of him who formed it,
“He has no understanding”?
eStrengthen the 3weak hands,
And make firm the 4feeble knees.
4 Say to those who are fearful-hearted,
“Be strong, do not fear!
Behold, your God will come with fvengeance,
With the recompense of God;
He will come and gsave you.”
kThey do not know nor understand;
For lHe has 2shut their eyes, so that they cannot see,
And their hearts, so that they cannot munderstand.
19 And no one nconsiders in his heart,
oA deceived heart has turned him aside;
And he cannot deliver his soul,
Nor say, “Is there not a plie in my right hand?”
“Therefore hear this now, you who are given to pleasures,
Who dwell securely,
Who say in your heart, ‘I am, and there is no one else besides me;
I shall not sit as a widow,
Nor shall I know the loss of children’;
9 But these two things shall come to you
pIn a moment, in one day:
“For you have trusted in your wickedness;
You have said, ‘No one qsees me’;
Your wisdom and your knowledge have 2warped you;
And you have said in your heart,
‘I am, and there is no one else besides me.’
11 Therefore evil shall come upon you;
You shall not know from where it arises.
And trouble shall fall upon you;
You will not be able 3to put it off.
And rdesolation shall come upon you ssuddenly,
Which you shall not know.
“Listen to Me, you who know righteousness,
You people qin whose heart is My law:
rDo not fear the reproach of men,
Nor be afraid of their insults.
8 For sthe moth will eat them up like a garment,
And the worm will eat them like wool;
But My righteousness will be forever,
And My salvation from generation to generation.”
The righteous perishes,
And no man takes it to heart;
aMerciful men are taken away,
bWhile no one considers
That the righteous is taken away from 1evil.
2 He shall enter into peace;
They shall rest in ctheir beds,
Each one walking in his uprightness.
For thus says the High and Lofty One
Who inhabits eternity, rwhose name is Holy:
s“I dwell in the high and holy place,
tWith him who has a contrite and humble spirit,
uTo revive the spirit of the humble,
And to revive the heart of the contrite ones.
For our ptransgressions are multiplied before You,
And our sins testify against us;
For our transgressions are with us,
And as for our iniquities, we know them:
13 In transgressing and lying against the Lord,
And departing from our God,
Speaking oppression and revolt,
Conceiving and uttering qfrom the heart words of falsehood.
Behold, My servants shall sing for joy of heart,
But you shall cry for sorrow of heart,
And zwail for 5grief of spirit.
15 You shall leave your name aas a curse to bMy chosen;
For the Lord God will slay you,
“At that time Jerusalem shall be called The Throne of the Lord, and all the nations shall be gathered to it, kto the name of the Lord, to Jerusalem. No more shall they lfollow 3the dictates of their evil hearts.
But this people has a defiant and rebellious heart;
They have revolted and departed.
24 They do not say in their heart,
“Let us now fear the Lord our God,
kWho gives rain, both the lformer and the latter, in its season.
mHe reserves for us the appointed weeks of the harvest.”
25 nYour iniquities have turned these things away,
And your sins have withheld good from you.
ople. And walk in all the ways that I have commanded you, that it may be well with you.’ 24 fYet they did not obey or incline their ear, but gfollowed 2the counsels and the 3dictates of their evil hearts, and hwent 4backward and not forward. 2
vEveryone is wdull-hearted, without knowledge;
For the shepherds have become dull-hearted,
And have not sought the Lord;
Therefore they shall not prosper,
And all their flocks shall be kscattered.
hYet they did not obey or incline their ear, but ieveryone 2followed the dictates of his evil heart; therefore I will bring upon them all the words of this covenant, which I commanded them to do, but which they have not done.’ ”
They have made it rdesolate;
Desolate, it mourns to Me;
The whole land is made desolate,
Because sno one takes it to heart.
This evil people, who crefuse to hear My words, who dfollow 7the dictates of their hearts, and walk after other gods to serve them and worship them, shall be just like this sash which is profitable for nothing.
t“The prophets prophesy lies in My name. uI have not sent them, commanded them, nor spoken to them; they prophesy to you a false vision, 3divination, a worthless thing, and the vdeceit of their heart. 1
Your words were found, and I zate them,
And aYour word was to me the joy and rejoicing of my heart;
“Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength,
Whose heart departs from the Lord." Je 17:5
“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; Who can know it?
I, the Lord, search the heart, I test the mind, even to give every man according to his ways,
According to the fruit of his doings." Je 17:9-10
‘Thus says the Lord: “Behold, I am fashioning a disaster and devising a plan against you. fReturn now every one from his evil way, and make your ways and your doings ggood.” ’ ”
God’s Warning Rejected
12 And they said, h“That is hopeless! So we will walk according to our own plans, and we will every one 4obey the idictates 5of his evil heart.”
But His word was in my heart like a kburning fire
Shut up in my bones;
I was weary of holding it back,
And lI could not.
“Do not listen to the words of the prophets who prophesy to you.
They make you worthless;
aThey speak a vision of their own heart,
Not from the mouth of the Lord.
17 They continually say to those who despise Me,
‘The Lord has said, b“You shall have peace” ’;
And to everyone who cwalks according to the 7dictates of his own heart, they say,
d‘No evil shall come upon you.’ ”
Then I will give them ga heart to know Me, that I am the Lord; and they shall be hMy people, and I will be their God, for they shall return to Me iwith their whole heart.
And lyou will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me mwith all your heart. 14 nI will be found by you, says the Lord, and I will bring you back from your captivity;
yBut this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: zI will put My law in their minds, and write it on their 9hearts; aand I will be their God, and they shall be My people.
They shall be rMy people, and I will be their God; 39 then I will sgive them one heart and one way, that they may fear Me forever, for the good of them and their children after them. 40 And tI will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from doing them good; but uI will put My fear in their hearts so that they will not depart from Me.
“The Lord has said concerning you, O remnant of Judah, w‘Do not go to Egypt!’ Know certainly that I have 4admonished you this day. 20 For you 5were hypocrites in your hearts when you sent me to the Lord your God, saying, ‘Pray for us to the Lord our God, and according to all that the Lord your God says, so declare to us and we will do it.’ 21
eI will take you from among the nations, gather you out of all countries, and bring you into your own land. 25 fThen I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean; I will cleanse you gfrom all your filthiness and from all your idols. 26 I will give you a hnew heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 I will put My iSpirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them.
But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself kwith the portion of the king’s delicacies, nor with the wine which he drank; therefore he requested of the chief of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.
Thank You, Lord!
