Belief - but not saving faith
"You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe—and tremble!" Jas 2:19
"Now there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit. And he cried out, saying, 'Let us alone! What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth? Did You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!' But Jesus rebuked him, saying, 'Be quiet, and come out of him!'” Mk 1:23-25
"Now it happened, as we went to prayer, that a certain slave girl possessed with a spirit of divination met us, who brought her masters much profit by fortune-telling. This girl followed Paul and us, and cried out, saying, 'These men are the servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to us the way of salvation.'" Ac 16:16-17
"And the evil spirit answered and said, 'Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?' Then the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, overpowered them, and prevailed against them.... And many who had believed came confessing and telling their deeds. Also, many of those who had practiced magic brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all." Ac 19:15-19
"For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes.... For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, 'The just shall live by faith.' For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them." Ro 1:16-19 If the whole gospel is preached -- not just the comfortable part of it -- the heart drawn by God will know the righteousness of God, be convicted of sin, repent from sins, believe the truth, and follow God.
"For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.” For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him. For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved . 'How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: 'How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace, Who bring glad tidings of good things!' But they have not all obeyed the gospel." Romans 10:10-16
Salvation
"In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory." Eph 1:13-14
Only let your conduct be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of your affairs, that you stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel, and not in any way terrified by your adversaries, which is to them a proof of perdition, but to you of salvation, and that from God. For to you it has been granted on behalf of Christ, not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for His sake...." Php 1:27-30
"Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure." Php 2:12-13
"But let us who are of the day be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet the hope of salvation. For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, that whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with Him. Therefore comfort each other and edify one another, just as you also are doing." 1 Th 5:8-11
But we are bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God from the beginning chose you for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth, to which He called you by our gospel, for the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ." 2 Th 2:13-14
"...from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work." 2 Ti 3:15-17
"He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him... of whom we have much to say, and hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing. For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food. For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe. But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil." Heb 5:9-14
Sanctification
"Therefore, leaving the discussion of the elementary principles of Christ, let us go on to perfection, not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God...." Heb 6:1
"...gird up the loins of your mind, be
sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought
to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; as obedient children, not
conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance; but as He
who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it
is written, “ Be holy, for I am holy.' ...knowing that you were not redeemed
with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received
by tradition from your fathers, but with the precious blood of Christ....
Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in
sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart, having
been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of
God which lives and abides forever...." 1 Pe 1:13-23
Saved
"Then one said to Him, “Lord, are there few who are saved?' And He said to them, 'Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many... will seek to enter and will not be able. When once the Master of the house has risen up and shut the door, and you begin to stand outside and knock at the door, saying, ‘Lord, Lord, open for us,’ and He will answer and say to you, ‘I do not know you, where you are from,’ then you will begin to say, ‘We ate and drank in Your presence, and You taught in our streets.’ But He will say, ‘I tell you I do not know you, where you are from. Depart from Me, all you workers of iniquity.’ There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth... They will come from the east and the west, from the north and the south, and sit down in the kingdom of God." Lk 13:23-29
*"Now when they heard this, they were cut to
the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, 'Men and
brethren, what shall we do?' 38Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let
every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the
remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
'For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off,
as many as the Lord our God will call.”
And with many other words he testified and exhorted them, saying, “Be saved
from this perverse generation.” Then those who gladly received his word were
baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them. And they
continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking
of bread, and in prayers. Then fear came upon every soul, and many
wonders and signs were done through the apostles.
Ac 2:37-43
"And He commanded us to preach to the people, and to testify that it is He who was ordained by God to be Judge of the living and the dead. To Him all the prophets witness that, through His name, whoever believes in Him will receive remission of sins.' While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who heard the word." Ac 10:42-44
“The word is near you, in your mouth and in
your heart” (that is, the word of faith which we preach): that if you
confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God
has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one
believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made
unto salvation. For the Scripture says, 'Whoever believes on Him will
not be put to shame.'
"How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not
believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how
shall they hear without a preacher?...
"But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For
Isaiah says, 'Lord, who has believed our report?' So then faith comes by
hearing, and hearing by the word of God." Ro 10:8-11, 14, 16-17
"...the fire will test each one’s work, of what sort it is. If anyone’s work which he has built on it endures, he will receive a reward. If anyone’s work is burned, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire." 1 Co 3:13-15
"...I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand, by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures, and that He was seen by Cephas, then by the twelve.... 1 Co 15:1-5
"For we ourselves were also once foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving various lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful and hating one another. But when the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward man appeared, not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior, that having been justified by His grace we should become heirs according to the hope of eternal life." Tit 3:3-7
Few are saved
By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. By faith he dwelt in the land of promise as in a foreign country, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise; 0for he waited for the city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God." Heb 11:8-10
"For you have need of endurance, so that after
you have done the will of God, you may receive the promise:
'For yet a little while, and He who is coming will come and will not tarry. Now
the just shall live by faith;
But if anyone draws back, My soul has no pleasure in him.” But we are
not of those who draw back to perdition, but of those who believe to the
saving of the soul." Heb 10:36-39
"For if God did not spare the angels who sinned, but cast them down to hell and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved for judgment;and did not spare the ancient world, but saved Noah, one of eight people, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood on the world of the ungodly; and turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes, condemned them to destruction, making them an example to those who afterward would live ungodly; and delivered righteous Lot, who was oppressed by the filthy conduct of the wicked (for that righteous man, dwelling among them, tormented his righteous soul from day to day by seeing and hearing their lawless deeds)— then the Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptations and to reserve the unjust under punishment for the day of judgment, and especially those who walk according to the flesh in the lust of uncleanness and despise authority." 2 Pe 2:4-10
Then He said, “...many widows were in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, and there was a great famine throughout all the land; but to none of them was Elijah sent except to Zarephath, in the region of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet, and none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian. So all those in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath, and rose up and thrust Him out of the city; and they led Him to the brow of the hill on which their city was built, that they might throw Him down over the cliff. Then passing through the midst of them, He went His way." Lk 4:24-30
Sanctification of the soul
"For you have need of endurance, so that after
you have done the will of God, you may receive the promise:
'For yet a little while, and He who is coming will come and will not tarry. Now
the just shall live by faith;
But if anyone draws back, My soul has no pleasure in him.” But we are
not of those who draw back to perdition, but of those who believe to the
saving of the soul." Heb 10:36-39
"Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure. Do all things without complaining and disputing, that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast the word of life, so that I may rejoice in the day of Christ that I have not run in vain or labored in vain." Php 2:12-16
Repentance -- more easy for overt sinners - the missing part of today's gospel - replaced by "passionate love"
"For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death." 2 Co 7:10
"From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” Mt 4:17
Last exhortation to disciples: "Then He said to them, 'Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem." Lk 24:46-47
"When Jesus heard that, He said to them, 'Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy and not sacrifice.’ For I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.” Mt 9:12-13
"When Jesus heard it, He said to them, 'Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.” Mk 2:17
"...their scribes and the Pharisees complained against His disciples, saying, “Why do You eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?' Jesus answered and said to them, 'Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.” Lk 5:30-32
"Now after John was put in prison, Jesus came to Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, and saying, 'The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.” Mk 1:14-15
"Jesus said to them, '...tax collectors and harlots enter the kingdom of God before you. For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him; but tax collectors and harlots believed him; and when you saw it, you did not afterward relent and believe him." Mt 21:31-32
"So they went out and preached that people should repent...." Mk 6:12
"Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works which were done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. But it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment than for you." Lk 10:13-14
"Jesus answered and said to them, 'Do you suppose that these Galileans were worse sinners than all other Galileans, because they suffered such things? I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish. Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them, do you think that they were worse sinners than all other men who dwelt in Jerusalem? I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish.” Lk 13:2-5
“And when he comes home, he calls together his
friends and neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my
sheep which was lost!’ I say to you that likewise there will be more
joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine just persons
who need no repentance.
"Or what woman, having ten silver coins, if she loses one
coin, does not light a lamp, sweep the house, and search carefully until she
finds it? And when she has found it, she calls her friends and neighbors
together, saying, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found the piece which I lost!’
Likewise, I say to you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God
over one sinner who repents.” Lk 15:6-10
“Therefore let all the house of Israel know
assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and
Christ. Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said
to Peter and the rest of the apostles, 'Men and brethren, what shall we do?
Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in
the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall
receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is to you
and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our
God will call.”
"And with many other words he testified and exhorted
them, saying, 'Be saved from this perverse generation.' Then those who gladly
received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were
added to them. And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine
and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers. Then fear came upon
every soul, and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles. Now
all who believed were together, and had all things in common, and sold their
possessions and goods, and divided them among all, as anyone had need. So
continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to
house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart, praising
God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily
those who were being saved." Ac 2:36-47*
“But those things which God foretold by the mouth of all His prophets, that the Christ would suffer, He has thus fulfilled. Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out." Ac 3:17-19
“Him God has exalted to His right hand to be Prince and Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins. And we are His witnesses to these things, and so also is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey Him.” Ac 5:31-32
“If therefore God gave them the same gift as He gave us when we believed on the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could withstand God?' When they heard these things they became silent; and they glorified God, saying, 'Then God has also granted to the Gentiles repentance to life.” Ac 11:17-18 Repentance is a gift from the Holy 'Spirit. It follows conviction of sin -- another work of the Spirit. Apart from conviction, repentance there is no clear understanding of redemption. No problem, no solution.
2Then Paul ... said, “29“Therefore, since we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Divine Nature is like gold or silver or stone, something shaped by art and man’s devising. “Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent, because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness....” Ac 17:22-31
Paul said, 'John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.” Ac 19:4
“You know, from the first day that I came to Asia, in what manner I always lived among you, serving the Lord with all humility, with many tears and trials which happened to me by the plotting of the Jews; how I kept back nothing that was helpful, but proclaimed it to you, and taught you publicly and from house to house, testifying to Jews, and also to Greeks, repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ." Ac 20:18-21
"Therefore, King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision, but declared first to those in Damascus and in Jerusalem, and throughout all the region of Judea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent, turn to God, and do works befitting repentance. For these reasons the Jews seized me in the temple and tried to kill me." Ac 26:19-21
"And do you think this, O man, you who judge those practicing such things, and doing the same, that you will escape the judgment of God? Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance? But in accordance with your hardness and your impenitent heart you are treasuring up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, who “will render to each one according to his deeds..." Ro 2:3-9
"For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death." 2 Co 7:10
"A servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient, in humility correcting those who are in opposition, if God perhaps will grant them repentance, so that they may know the truth, and that they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will." 2 Ti 2:24-26
"Therefore, leaving the discussion of the elementary principles of Christ, let us go on to perfection, not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, of the doctrine of baptisms, of laying on of hands, of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment." Heb 6:1-2
"...lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by this many become defiled; lest there be any fornicator or profane person like Esau, who for one morsel of food sold his birthright. For you know that afterward, when he wanted to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no place for repentance, though he sought it diligently with tears." Heb 12:15-17
"The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance." 2 Pe 3:9
"'Repent, or else I will come to you quickly
and will fight against them with the sword of My mouth."
Re 2:16
“Remember therefore how you have received and
heard; hold fast and repent. Therefore if you will not watch, I will come
upon you as a thief, and you will not know what hour I will come upon you."
Re 3:3
“As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Therefore be zealous and repent." Re 3:19
"They blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, and did not repent of their deeds." Re 16:11
Salvation - Repentance
"...now it is high time to awake out of sleep; for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed. The night is far spent, the day is at hand. Therefore let us cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light. Let us walk properly, as in the day, not in revelry and drunkenness, not in lewdness and lust, not in strife and envy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts." Ro 13:11-14

not of those who draw back to perdition, but of those who believe to the
saving of the soul." Heb 10:36-39
"He said to them, “Let us go into the next towns, that I may preach there also, because for this purpose I have come forth.” Mk 1:38
"...but He said to them, “I must preach the kingdom of God to the other cities also, because for this purpose I have been sent.” And He was preaching in the synagogues of Galilee." Lk 4:43-44
“Now My soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save Me from this hour’? But for this purpose I came to this hour. Father, glorify Your name.” Jn 12:27-28
"And Peter said unto him, ‘Thy silver with thee—may it be to destruction! because the gift of God thou didst think to possess through money; thou hast neither part nor lot in this thing, for thy heart is not right before God; reform, therefore, from this thy wickedness, and beseech God, if then the purpose of thy heart may be forgiven thee." Ac 8:20-22, YLT
"Then all who heard were amazed, and said, “Is this not he who destroyed those who called on this name in Jerusalem, and has come here for that purpose, so that he might bring them bound to the chief priests?” But Saul increased all the more in strength..." Ac 9:21-22
When he came and had seen the grace of God, he was glad, and encouraged them all that with purpose of heart they should continue with the Lord. For he was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and of faith." Ac 11:23-24
“For when David had served God’s purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep; he was buried with his fathers and his body decayed." Ac 13:36, NIV
“His purpose in all of this was that the nations should seek after God and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him—though he is not far from any one of us." Ac 17:26-27, NLT
“But,' some say, 'our sins serve a good purpose, for people will see God’s goodness when he declares us sinners to be innocent. Isn’t it unfair, then, for God to punish us?' (That is actually the way some people talk.)" Ro 3:4-5, NLT
"...whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin." Ro 3:19-20
"And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose." Ro 8:28-29
"What purpose then does the law serve? It was added because of transgressions, till the Seed should come to whom the promise was made... "But before faith came, we were kept under guard by the law, kept for the faith which would afterward be revealed. Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith." Ga 3:19-25
Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me His prisoner, but share with me in the sufferings for the gospel according to the power of God, who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began...." 2 Ti 1:8-9
“And the ten horns which you saw on the beast, these will hate the harlot, make her desolate and naked, eat her flesh and burn her with fire. And the woman whom you saw is that great city which reigns over the kings of the earth.” Re 17:16-18
