My concerns are real and the databases are real, and the funding for them is real. And somehow if the ethical nature of the collecting is brought up the consensus must be that this is ethical, and why should anyone suspect that there could be a misuse of the data?

UNESCO's Programme on Man and the Biosphere (MAB) develops the basis, within the natural and the social sciences, for the sustainable use and conservation of biological diversity, and for the improvement of the relationship between people and their environment globally.

http://www.mabnet.org/home2.html

"The mission of the United States MAB Program is to explore, demonstrate, promote, and encourage harmonious relationships between people and their environments building on the MAB network of Biosphere Reserves and interdisciplinary research. The long-term goal of the U.S. MAB Program is to contribute to achieving a sustainable society early in the 21st Century. The MAB mission and long term goal will be implemented, in the United States and internationally, through public-private partnerships and linkages that sponsor and promote cooperative interdisciplinary research, experimentation, education and information exchange on options by which societies can achieve sustainability." Adopted by the U.S. National Committee MAB, July 26, 1995.

Unknown to most people, the Lord has been moving over recent times to bring into being a more comprehensive harvest information database than earlier envisioned, for use in the 21st century / 3rd millennium. Several independent streams of resources and vision / needs have come together over the past two (2) years and melded into a process and plan for a new Harvest Information System (HIS) needed by the Body of Christ towards completion of the unfinished task of world evangelization. Select articles and presentations have been made on the HIS vision and plans over this period, while a multi-organization Steering Committee has come together to oversee the process and to pray for its appropriate ongoing organizational setup for continuance when AD2000 closes down early 2001.

PEOPLES INTEGRATION INITIAL PHASE COMPLETED
The initial stage of people group data integration is now complete. Data from at least six major sources including Ethnologue / ROPAL (SIL), Joshua Project, India Mission Association, Asia Minorities Outreach, Integrated Strategic Planning Database (IMB-SBC) and Patrick Johnstone (Operation World) have been merged into a single database. Each people has been given a unique code. In the table that combines Peoples and Countries, peoples are listed in each country they live in. The Peoples table contains about 10800+ records and the PeopleCountry table contains about 16700+ records.

Purpose Summary

The current Missions Atlas Project (MAP) is an attempt to pick up the challenge Charles H. Fahs issued in 1925, namely to utilize the advances in computer and Internet technologies to establish an accurate base map of the world (at least a 1:1,000,000 projection).

On that base map will be built a depiction of all the inhabited cities, towns, and villages of the world, collate the most accurate data available for displaying the locations of all known evangelical churches in their habitat locations throughout the world, and integrate correlating data that yields strategic implications (such as languages spoken, population figures, identifiable people groups, ratio of churches to people by provincial levels and beyond).

Rather than just talk about new paradigms, we want to demonstrate, via an experiment, how we might incorporate the new rules and new tools into Christian philanthropy. The process described below is the result of a collaboration between ICTA, Maclellan Foundation, and The Gathering. .........................................

Winners (includes)
Churches In Habitat: a web database and mapping system that will track every city, town and village on the planet, and the status of the church. All as a tool to assist in saturation church planting strategies. (links to a pdffile for a 2 page document, this is a Missions Atlas project) ...............

The other recommended proposals, which also follow in order, are:

Admittedly, this does not measure the health of the church. The Great Commission Manifesto called for the establishment of a mission-minded church planting movement within every unreached people group so that the Gospel is accessible to all people. It called for the establishment of a Christian community of worship, instruction in the word, healing, fellowship, prayer, disciple making, evangelism, and missionary concern in every human community. The quality of the churches called for in the Manifesto would be difficult to assess, but the criteria are being created in the developing Harvest Information System.

MAB ["Man and the Biosphere" - http://www.mabnet.org] data gathering and processing on caribou seems to follow a similar system and make similar use of technology.

The High Latitude Ecosystems Directorate will expand its study of caribou herds in their Alaskan/Canadian subarctic ranges. The two specific goals of the current research is to model and analyze the dynamic interactions between habitat, hunting, and population demographics of the Porcupine caribou herd; and design and develop a harvest information system that relies on data input from users and provides predictive feedback to communities for developing co-management hunting policy.

Below is a list of all the countries for which we now have some information, as well as a list of people and organizations that have been helpful in supplying, compiling and/or updating information for our databases for each country or region. The countries with no contact person represent those for which we need assistance at this time to verify and update our existing information and databases.

For most countries, we are hoping to establish a working relationship with someone (or an organization) who currently lives in a particular country, and who agrees to assist us in obtaining the most complete and reliable information possible for that country.

In 1981-1982, Holland took a sabbatical to continue his doctoral studies in the School of World Mission (SWM) at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California, where he had previously completed his Master's program in Missiology (M.A. in 1972, concentration in Cultural Anthropology), While attending classes at the SWM, .....................................................
The GLAMA study was a joint venture with more than a dozen institutions, including the U.S. Center for World Mission, the William Carey International University, World Vision USA, Bressee Institute for Urban Studies (Church of the Nazarene), Azusa Pacific University, BIOLA University, Urban Training Institute of the School of Theology at Claremont (United Methodist Church), Southern Baptist Convention of Southern California, Korean Frontier Mission, Urban Training Institute at the Church on Brady (Southern Baptist, affiliated with Grand Canyon University in Arizona), School of Religion at the University of Southern California (USC), Youth With A Mission (YWAM) and Pacific Christian University (Christian Church-Churches of Christ).

The final result of the GLAMA study was a computer database of about 12,500 religious groups (of every religion and denomination) and a series of reports and workshops to share the fruit of the research and analysis, which began in 1989 and ended in 1996. This project included research and analysis of all known religious groups in Los Angeles 5-county region, as well as every identifiable ethno-linguistical group. The focus of the study was on "Ethnic and Religious Diversity in GLAMA," with a specific goal to identify the least evangelized ethno-linguistical groups (or population segments) in terms of Protestant church outreach.

RITA DATABASE
The purpose for this research and analysis is to create a database of reliable information on every religious group in existence in every country of the Americas, and to make known this body of information to the academic community (especially to professors, fellow researchers and students), governmental and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), mission agencies and denominational bodies, and the general public via the Internet in an electronic format.

To this end, we have created a new website to facilitate the interchange of information and to enlist the participation of fellow researchers, based in each of the respective countries of the Americas, to assist us in the process of correcting, updating and developing the RITA Database to its full potential as a tool for research and information sharing. ...........................................
The Scientific Study of Religion in Latin America and the Caribbean is a discipline that needs to be encouraged and respected by all, especially by those who are committed to a particular religious faith as well as by those who profess no religious affiliation or belief system. The lack of tolerance and respect for other people's human rights and their religious freedom is a social disease that needs to be cured, regardless of the source of the disease--religious fanaticism and any form of persecution by any group against any other group is a violation of our collective human rights in a free society.

PROLADES is dedicated to upholding these principals and values as we pursue our research and information goals, and we are willing and eager to work with any person or organization in any country of the Americas (and Spain and Portugal) that respects and lives by these guidelines, regardless of their religious affiliation or lack thereof.

Mission database to support world missions

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (USA) -- The AD2000 and Beyond Movement, based here, is gearing up for the debut of a demonstration model it hopes to have ready early this year of an important new mission tool for the 21st century -- the "HIS" database. The database is intended as a resource to provide accurate, up-to-date information on unreached people groups in order to establish their spiritual status, who may be working with them now, and what more needs to be done to reach everyone on the planet with the Gospel message of Christ.
