The Bible
[edit]

On May 24, 2011, Downey and husband Mark Burnett announced they were producing a 10-hour docudrama for the History channel, The Bible, based on stories from the Biblescheduled to air in 2013. Downey and Burnett wanted to stay as true to the content in the Bible as possible so they put together a wide variety of pastors and academics to review the script and filming. For example, they worked with Pastors Joel Osteen and Rick Warren and academics such as Craig A. Evans and Mark Goodacre.[14]  As of March 25, 2013, The Bible series has been watched by over 80 million viewers during its first three installments.[15] The show has been the number one downloaded TV show in iTunes and ranked number 2 on Amazon's best sellers in movies and TV.[15]

It is Downey and Burnett's first such collaboration as producers. Downey is playing the role of Mother Mary, the mother of Jesus in the later stages of his life.[15]

At the time, the "Touched By An Angel" actress issued a statement denouncing the comparison. Miracle Couple Mark Burnett and Roma Downey from Northern Ireland Touched by the ‘Son of God’: [Mark and Roma] say that their deep-rooted Christian faith came into play and overcame any differences and eventually this resulted in this Emmy Awarding husband and wife teaming up to produce the "The Bible," an epic five-week, 10-hour television miniseries which premiered March 3, 2013 on the History Channel. For two hours each Sunday night millions of viewers saw the Bible from Genesis to Revelation come to life in a way never before seen. (But much of that "life" was based on human imagination and the needed shift from biblical truth to human scripts and emosional pleasure) The final episode of the series aired on Easter Sunday and featured the death and resurrection of Jesus.... I asked Roma, how they came to produce "The Bible" miniseries and now "Son of God?"

"Mark then chipped in, and said, "We are Christians and it was a calling and we felt that our job was to use our enormous secular success on television and in the entertainment industry, to get the Bible series made."
