Brainwashing in America

Manipulating, monitoring, and managing human resources

Shortcut to Chart

China, like other communist countries, calls it "re-education." The minds of people with contrary beliefs and values must cleansed of "dangerous" notions that clash with government ideology – then packed full of the "right" ideology until they stand solid as rocks against all contrary facts. The privileges of "citizenship" depend on it. No civil rights can be granted to the "enemies of the state."

In America, it’s called remediation, sensitivity training, conflict resolution, mental health management, or any other word that would sound good and hide the unthinkable intent. The process involves most of the steps used to change attitudes and control minds in Communist lands during the fifties:

1. Mental and Moral confusion (cognitive dissonance)
2. Pressure to resolve conflict through compromise
3. Intimidation and fear of group rejection
4. Confession (sharing feelings), which leads to:
5. Trust for and submission to facilitator and group
6. Open-mindedness to new beliefs and values
7. Indoctrination with new values
8. Vilification of traditional authorities which builds:
9. Resentment & anger toward dissenting authorities
10. Manipulation of above feelings (against dissidents)
11. Suspicion and hatred toward non-conformists
12. Reporting dissidents (parents, friends, etc.)
13. Deprivation (sacrifice for the sake of the whole)

"Some called it psychological warfare," wrote Edward Hunter in his 1960 expose of the Soviet strategies for mind control, Brainwashing: The Men Who Defied It. "A better name would be brain warfare. The only difference… was that formerly weapons were aimed principally at bodies, to incapacitate and destroy them, whereas now they were aimed mainly at minds, so subvert and control them. . . . In brain warfare ultimate victory lay in the conquest of attitudes and feelings." Earlier in the book, he had written,

"The Reds wanted people to believe that it could be described by some familiar expression such as education, public relations, persuasion — or by some misleading term like mind reform and re-education . . . . So long as they could keep it concealed, without a name, opposition to it could be kept scattered and ineffective." (p. 6)

Intimidation. It happened to eight-year old honor student Kameryan Lueng in Alexandria, Louisiana. She had brought a family heirloom to share in her second-grade class, and she didn’t realize that the little knife attached to the chain of her grandfather’s gold-plated old pocket watch would violate the "zero tolerance" policy. The school punished the broken-hearted little girl with suspension from school and remediation at Redirection Academy.

"They were studying Colonial times, and Kameryan thought her teacher would be interested in seeing something old," said her mother, Cheryl Lueng. "Kameryan cried when I told her she couldn’t go back to her school on Monday. She feels like a criminal."

This chart is only the beginning of the end of a report on brainwashing, and it may not make sense without more explanation. As background information, you may want to read the articles, Mind Control and The UN Plan for Your Mental Health, as well as the excerpts from Edward Hunter's book, Brainwashing.

I would welcome suggestions on how to make this chart more helpful for families.
